چکیده

Preference representation and reasoning play a central role in supporting users with complex and multi-factorial decision processes. In fact, user tastes can be used to filter information and data in a personalized way, thus maximizing their expected utility. Over the years, many frameworks and languages have been proposed to deal with user preferences. Among them, one of the most prominent formalism to represent and reason with (qualitative) conditional preferences (CPs) are conditional preference theories (CP-theories). In this paper, we show how to combine them with Semantic Web technologies in order to encode in a standard SPARQL 1.1 query the semantics of a set of CP statements representing user preferences by means of RDF triples that refer to a “preference” OWL ontology. The framework that we propose allows a standard SPARQL client to query Linked Data datasets, and to order the results of such queries relative to a set of user preferences.

Conditional Preferences: A New Semantics for Database Queries

Preference queries aim to retrieve from large databases those objects that better match user’s requirements. Approaches proposed so far in the DB field for specifying preferences are limited when one needs to consider conditional, rather than absolute, preferences (e.g., I prefer driving by car in winter, and by motorbike in summer), which are common in context-aware applications. CP-nets are a...

Querying Databases with Incomplete CP-nets

Preference queries aim to retrieve from large databases (DB’s) those objects that better match user’s requirements. With the aim of supporting modern DB applications, such as context-aware ones, in which conditional preferences are the rule, in this paper we investigate the possibility of adopting conditional preference networks (CP-nets) for DB querying. To this end, we also consider the relev...

CRISNER: A Practically Efficient Reasoner for Qualitative Preferences

We present CRISNER (Conditional & Relative Importance Statement Network PrEference Reasoner), a tool that provides practically efficient as well as exact reasoning about qualitative preferences in popular ceteris paribus preference languages such as CP-nets, TCPnets, CP-theories, etc. The tool uses a model checking engine to translate preference specifications and queries into appropriate Kripk...

The local geometry of multiattribute tradeoff preferences

Existing representations for multiattribute ceteris paribus preference statements have provided useful treatments and clear semantics for qualitative comparisons, but have not provided similarly clear representations or semantics for comparisons involving quantitative tradeoffs. We use directional derivatives and other concepts from elementary differential geometry to interpret conditional mult...

Clark Glymour a Semantics and Methodology for Ceteris Paribus Hypotheses

Taking seriously the arguments of Earman, Roberts and Smith that ceteris paribus laws have no semantics and cannot be tested, I suggest that ceteris paribus claims have a kind of formal pragmatics, and that at least some of them can be verified or refuted
